Why Support Missions?
Missions is the heartbeat of God. It also shows the spiritual condition of the church. Some my say that music and membership does. If missions is the heartbeat of God and is the central desire of the church, then it exemplifies the spiritual health of the church.
I. The Purpose of Missions (the Gospel) vs. 13
"Gospel" means "good news". Paul says that the gospel consists of the death of Christ for our sins, His burial, and resurrection ~ I Corinthians 15:1-5. It is not a social gospel.
A. It’s the way of salvation ~ Acts 4:12: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
Jesus said in John 14:6 ~ Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
There is no other way ~ Hebrews 2:3: How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
B. It’s the work of God ~ Ephesians 2:8, 9: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any many should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
II. The Plea for Missions (the Gospel) vs 14
A. The cry of the lost! ~Psalm 142:4: I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
B. The Command of our Savior ~ Mark 16:15: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Ezekiel 3:18: When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Ezekiel 3:19: Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
Why Support Missions
1. The greatest mission ever known was when God looked down and sent His
Son ~John 3:16.
2. The world will never be brought to Christ unless we bring Christ to the world.
We are ambassadors ~ II Corinthians 5:20.
3. Jesus taught that missions was the way to make disciples.
4. Because Christ commanded us to do so. The great commission has never been canceled.
5. We cannot be happy unless we’re totally committed to telling others of Christ
~Romans 1:14-16: I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians, both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
6. If we don’t it’s a sure sign that we’ve lost our vision or never had one. ~Selfishness is a contradiction to Christianity.
7. A missionary spirit is the hope of the world and the nearest thing to the heart of God.
III. The Proclamation of Missions (the Gospel)! vs 15
Excerpts taken from sermon by: Oswald J. Smith.
A. We must reach the world.
"When we consider World Evangelism and the Great Commission we must think in terms of millions and hundreds of millions, otherwise there is no possibility of obeying Christ’s last command. Population facts force us to use the mass media of literature if we are to honestly face the "every creature" command. Christ said, ‘This Gospel must first be published among all nations...’ " -Oswald J. Smith.
"Do you realize that you owe everything you are to the printed page? Had it not been for the Word of God you would not have been a Christian." -Oswald J. Smith. The bible says, "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" ~ Romans 10:17.
"We have one task – it is to evangelize the human race with the only Gospel God ever gave. The size and urgency of our task demands the use of the mass media of literature. Our task can be accomplished in a short time – when our autobiography can be stated in the one sentence – ‘I have compassion on the multitude!’ " -Oswald J. Smith.
Give us the Tools!
It was during the time of the last World War. France had fallen. The United States had not yet come in. Great Britain was standing alone with her back against the wall expecting almost instant invasion. Sir Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England, decided to speak directly to the American people, Sir. Winston Churchill, in speaking to the American people, said this: " Give us the tools and we will finish the job." -Oswald J. Smith.
The missionaries echoes the same plea, "Give us the tools and we will finish the job." If we are to evangelize the world in our generation, we must give the missionary the tools to do the Job! Not just any tools, but the best quality. If we don’t, the cults will go before us.
B. We must Rescue the Perishing.
The song "Rescue the Perishing" written by Fanny Crosby, so adequately illustrates this mandate.
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save.
Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
Strenth for thy labor the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Savior has died.
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
That is why we must support missions! †
